Who uses them

Tourism, 4WD gear and holiday rentals

Rainbow Beach is the jumping-off point for K'gari (Fraser Island) via the Inskip Point barge, and the gateway to the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park and Double Island Point. A lot of what the town stores is connected to that. There's 4WD recovery gear, camping equipment, kayaks, surf and fishing gear, and the stock and spare parts that tour and hire operators need close to hand.

Holiday-rental owners are the other big group. Between guests, a locked container on the block keeps the owner's gear, spare linen, outdoor furniture and maintenance tools out of the rental and out of sight. Builders working on the town's steady flow of new homes and renovations use them as secure site stores.

The road in

One road, and a town that gets busy

Rainbow Beach is at the end of the line. The sealed route comes in from the Gympie side past Tin Can Bay, and every truck uses it. That's why deliveries here are planned rather than squeezed in. We line them up with our coast runs and confirm the day when you order.

Holiday periods are the time to be careful. Streets fill with 4WDs, trailers and visitors, and a truck needs somewhere safe to set up. If your block is on a busy street, or the rental is booked out, tell us so the delivery can be placed at a sensible point in your calendar.

Access

Dunes, slopes and soft sand

Rainbow Beach is built on and around old dunes, so blocks here are more varied than at Tin Can Bay. Some are steep, many are sandy, and a few have tight driveways cut into the slope. A tilt-tray needs a firm, reasonably level spot and a straight run to tip a container. On a steep or awkward block a crane truck can be the answer, and it costs more, so it's better to know before quoting.

Soft sand is the recurring problem. Even a level sandy spot can let a truck dig in. A compacted gravel pad or solid supports under the corners fixes most of it, and the container sits truer for years afterwards.

Salt, sand and sizes

Looking after a container on the coast

Keep the paint intact, treat scratches before rust starts, sweep sand and leaves off the roof, and keep the container up off the ground so air moves underneath. Salt air and blown sand together are hard on door seals and hinges, so a bit of maintenance goes a long way.

For 4WD and camping gear, a 20ft fitted with shelving is the common choice. On a tight rental block a 10ft may be the only thing that fits. If you're weighing up a container as extra accommodation or a studio, read our container homes reality check first. Approvals and heat need planning.

Rental owners

Working a container into a rental changeover

For holiday-rental owners, the container becomes the owner's cupboard. Spare linen, cleaning gear, beach umbrellas for guests, the owner's own surfboards and fishing gear, and the tools the cleaner or handyman needs all live in it, locked, while guests use the house.

A few things make that work better. Place the container where it doesn't take guest parking or block the view from the deck. Face the doors where the cleaner can reach them without walking through the house. Keep a set of keys with whoever manages the property. And because the town is humid and sandy, keep linen in sealed tubs rather than open on shelves, and clean the door seals now and then so sand doesn't stop them closing properly. Neighbours in a holiday street tend to notice new structures, so a tidy, well-placed container causes far less comment than one dropped on the verge.

Buy or hire

Owning it versus hiring it for a build

Rental owners and tourism businesses usually buy, because the storage is ongoing. Cargo-worthy used units are wind and watertight. As-is units are cheaper, but they're sold as seen and not sold watertight, so they suit recovery gear better than linen or electronics. Builders usually hire for the length of the job. Hire units go out cargo-worthy, wind and watertight.

Delivery is quoted with the container, including any crane work a steep block needs, so you get one delivered figure.

Rainbow Beach: straight answers

Do you deliver containers to Rainbow Beach?

Yes. Deliveries come in on the one sealed road from the Gympie side and are planned with our coast runs. The day is confirmed when you order.

Can a container go on a steep or sandy Rainbow Beach block?

Often, yes. Sandy spots need a firm pad or solid supports, and steep blocks may need a crane truck. Send photos and we'll include the right truck in the quote.

What size container suits 4WD and camping gear?

A 20ft with shelving suits most households. On a tight block, a 10ft may be the only option that fits.

Can a container be used as holiday accommodation?

Habitable use needs council and building approvals. Check with Gympie Regional Council before planning anything more than storage.
