Town blocks, acreage off the Mary Valley road and industrial sheds on the southside. Most Gympie jobs are a standard tilt-tray drop.
Around Gympie containers mostly get used for house moves, backyard storage, tradie tool stores, and somewhere dry and lockable to shift gear before the river comes up. Whatever yours is for, the process is the same: one call, one delivered price, right truck for your access.

Gympie grew out of the 1867 gold rush and has been a working town ever since: timber, dairy, trades, transport and the businesses that service the farms in every direction. Containers fit that pattern. Tradies want a secure store at the yard or on a job. Small businesses on the southside want overflow storage that doesn't mean signing a lease on a second shed. Households in Victory Heights or Jones Hill want somewhere dry for the contents of a room while they renovate.
Acreage owners on the edge of town, out towards Pie Creek, The Dawn and Glastonbury, are the other big group. On a few acres a container usually starts as build storage and ends up as the mower shed, the workshop or the place the camping gear lives. It needs no slab, no builder, and on most blocks no fuss.
Everyone in Gympie knows the river. The Mary has flooded the low parts of town many times, most recently and badly in 2022, and the lesson for anyone buying storage is simple: the ground the container sits on matters more than the container. A cargo-worthy container keeps rain out from above. It won't keep out rising water, because floodwater gets in past the door seals, and an empty container can float.
So check the council's flood mapping for your address and put the container above that line, on the highest practical spot on the block, with the corners on solid blocks or sleepers. If the only option is low ground, keep your irreplaceable things somewhere else and use the container for gear that's replaceable. Our flood-season guide covers what locals load into their containers when heavy rain is forecast.
Most Gympie deliveries are simple: a driveway, a tilt-tray and a clear spot. The town's hills are what you need to watch. Plenty of streets around the old town and the ridges have steep driveways and tight turns, and a tilt-tray needs a reasonably level spot and a straight run of about 15 metres to set a 20ft down. Low power lines and big trees over the drive are the other usual problems.
Industrial yards on the southside are generally easy, with wide gates, hardstand and room to turn. On acreage, soft ground after rain is the main risk. Send a photo from the street and one of the drop spot, and we'll confirm whether a tilt-tray will do or whether the job needs something else.
A 20ft covers most jobs in town: a three-bedroom house move, a tradie's full kit, or a renovation's worth of furniture. Where the only space is a side gap or a single car spot, a 10ft fits, though it costs more than a 20ft because it's cut down and rebuilt. On acreage, a 40ft is the cheapest storage per square metre, provided there's room for a sidelifter. If you'll stand and work inside, go for a high cube.
Gympie has a lot of older high-set timber houses, and renovating one usually means emptying it room by room. A container in the yard lets you shift furniture out of the kitchen while the kitchen is done, then swap it for the bedroom furniture when the bedrooms go. It saves paying for off-site storage and trailer trips across town, and your things stay where you can check on them.
Two local traps are worth knowing. The first is under-house storage. The space under a high-set house feels like a free shed, but in the low parts of town it's exactly what goes under first when the Mary comes up. A container on higher ground is a better place for anything you'd hate to lose. The second is the yard itself. Old Gympie yards are often terraced or sloping, with clothes lines, fruit trees and a garden shed in the only flat spot, so measure before you choose where the container goes.
For trade businesses around Gympie, a container is usually cheaper than extending a shed and quicker than finding a second premises. Plumbers keep fittings and pipe in one, electricians use them as a cable and parts store, and builders drop one on a job site to hold tools and materials. A lock box shields the padlock, so a container is far harder to get into than a site box or a ute canopy.
Businesses with a yard on the southside often line containers up along a boundary to make a secure compound, or use one as a dry store beside the workshop. Tell us how the yard is laid out and where the gates are, and we'll plan the placement so each unit goes down where it's going to stay.
If the need is permanent, buying usually wins, and a well-kept cargo-worthy container holds its value. Why a container is storage you can sell later explains the maths. As-is units cost less, but they're sold as seen and not sold watertight, so they suit rough storage only. For a renovation or a move, hire is tidier. Hire units are cargo-worthy grade, wind and watertight when they go out.

Often, yes. A tilt-tray needs a reasonably level drop spot and a straight run of about 15 metres. Send photos of the driveway and the spot and we'll confirm the truck before you order.
Temporary storage usually doesn't, but permanent placement or any fit-out can. Check with Gympie Regional Council's planning team for your lot.

Gympie floods. A container won't keep floodwater out — nothing at this price will — but placed high on your block it's the cheapest way to get your gear above the Mary.
Sheds depreciate to zero. A well-bought shipping container holds most of its value — here's the resale maths locals should know before buying storage.
