Cooloola Cove is a planned residential community just back from Tin Can Bay, and it's popular with people moving to the coast, retirees and families after a quieter life than the Sunshine Coast. The containers we deliver there mostly solve one problem: there's more stuff than garage. People moving from a bigger house keep furniture and boxes in a container while they work out what fits. Others use one as a permanent shed for the mower, tools, the tinny and the caravan gear.
Tradies living in the Cove use them to keep tools and materials secure at home, and a few small businesses run from home with a container as the stockroom.
Most Cooloola Cove blocks are flat, with wide streets and room for a truck to swing, so a tilt-tray drop is normally straightforward. The two things to check are the ground and overhead clearance. The area is sandy, and although the surface is firm on a lawn, the drop spot needs to hold a loaded truck as it tips. Street trees and power lines into the house can limit where a tilt-tray can lift.
If the spot you have in mind is along a side boundary, measure the gap. A tilt-tray needs about 3.5 metres of clear width, and a container is 2.44 metres wide once it's down, so you need a bit of room either side to open the doors and walk past.
Put the corners on pavers, concrete pads or sleepers rather than straight onto sand or lawn. It keeps the floor dry, the doors square and the container easy to move later. Face the doors where you'll actually approach it, and leave room for them to swing fully open.
Coastal humidity means a closed steel box can sweat inside. Airflow helps, and so does keeping cardboard boxes off the floor on a pallet and a little away from the walls. A cargo-worthy container keeps the rain out, but damp air still gets in whenever the doors are opened.
Council rules are worth checking if the container is staying permanently or being fitted out. Cooloola Cove is within Gympie Regional Council, and the planning team can confirm what applies to your lot.
A 20ft is the common pick. It fits a household's worth of furniture during a move, or works as a permanent shed with room for a ride-on mower and shelving. Where the only space is a narrow strip beside the house, a 10ft will fit, although it costs more than a 20ft because it's rebuilt from a larger unit. If a workshop is the goal, a high cube gives you the headroom to stand at a bench.
Many Cooloola Cove households are set up for travel and the water, with a caravan or camper trailer, a tinny, kayaks and all the gear that goes with them. Garages fill quickly, and gear left under a carport gets sun-bleached and salty. A container beside the carport or at the back of the block keeps camping kit, fishing gear and spare parts together and locked, ready for the next trip.
If you're thinking of putting the tinny inside, measure the boat, trailer and motor against the door opening and internal width first. A 20ft often takes a small tinny on a trailer with the motor tilted, but not always. Otherwise, many owners park the boat beside the container and use the container for everything else, which frees up the garage for the car again.
If you're between moves, hire is often the answer. Hire units go out cargo-worthy, wind and watertight, and go back when you're settled. If the container is going to be your shed, buying is cheaper over time and it keeps resale value. As-is units are cheaper again, but they're sold as seen and not sold watertight, so they're not the choice for furniture.
Delivery to the Cove runs with our coast trips. It's quoted with the container, and the day is confirmed when you order.
Usually, yes. Most blocks are flat with wide streets. Check the drop spot is firm, since the area is sandy, and that there are no low wires or branches overhead.
Yes. Hire suits storage between moves, and the container is collected once you're settled.
Pavers, concrete pads or sleepers under the four corners, not straight onto sand or lawn. It keeps the floor dry and the doors square.
Measure the gap. A tilt-tray needs about 3.5 metres of clear width to place it, and a 10ft may suit a narrow strip better than a 20ft.
Sheds depreciate to zero. A well-bought shipping container holds most of its value — here's the resale maths locals should know before buying storage.
Gympie floods. A container won't keep floodwater out — nothing at this price will — but placed high on your block it's the cheapest way to get your gear above the Mary.
